What IS Gloop!? (And How To Set Up Like a Scientist)
TL;DR: Gloop! chemically welds 3D printed parts into one piece. Before you start: wax paper down, nitrile gloves on, fan blowing, shake 30 seconds, let it settle 2 minutes, open away from your face. That's it. Details below for those who enjoy understanding things... we knew we liked you.
It's Science! Not Magic…
3D Gloop! is a hybrid adhesive — part solvent cement, part reactive glue, all science. Here's what happens when you slather that Science Sauce:
The carrier solvents gently dissolve the surface of your print.
The monomer complex gets to work: as the solvent evaporates, it chemically cures and crosslinks directly INTO the plastic itself.
What's left isn't two parts stuck together. It's one part. A chemical weld, stronger than the plastic around it.
Super glue? That's a weak mechanical bond wearing a lab coat. Epoxy? Mechanical bond, messier coat. Gloop! doesn't sit ON your plastic — it becomes part of it.
🖼 ARTWORK — 3-panel molecular diagram in brand purple. Panel 1: solvent droplets softening a layered print surface (layers visibly "melting"). Panel 2: chain-link molecules weaving down into BOTH surfaces across the joint line. Panel 3: the joint line gone — one continuous part with a small "STRONGER THAN THE PLASTIC ITSELF" flex tag. Contrast inset: super glue as a thin brittle line just sitting between two surfaces, cracking.
One important consequence: Gloop! is formulated per plastic. PLA Gloop! for PLA, PETG Gloop! for PETG, ABS/ASA Gloop! for ABS & ASA. The flavor on the label is the polymer it welds. (Mixing materials? That works too — see Guide 5.)
Respect the Sauce
3D Gloop! is a professional-grade adhesive. Be mindful of it and treat it with respect. The label warnings go beyond what the Bureaucrats legally require of our Robot Overlords. Read them, and keep the SDS handy at /sds.
Your pre-Gloop! checklist:
Protect your surface. Lay down wax paper, waxy side up. It's cheap, it's disposable, and Gloop! can't soak in. Skip the silicone mat (solvents may swell it) and definitely skip the nice varnished dining table. Solvents WILL eat it... and you will not enjoy explaining that to your biological prime matrix, or your carbon unit companion.
Glove up. Nitrile gloves, ~6 mil (3 mil is the bare minimum, 9 mil if you're fancy). If you slosh a serious amount onto a glove, swap it immediately; solvents slowly diffuse through. GLOVES DO NOT MAKE YOU IMMORTAL OR IMPERVIOUS. Gloop! forming permanent molecular bonds is the whole point; ideally it's not with you...
Move the air. Set a fan blowing across your workpiece AND your face. Work in a big room, near an open window, outdoors, or in a fume hood if you've got one. Never in a closet or other enclosed space. And here's the sneaky part: your nose stops noticing the solvents over time even while they're still there. No smell ≠ no vapor. Keep the fan ON.
Kill the sparks. While Gloop! is non-flammable, solvent vapors and ignition sources are NOT friends. It's a good idea to unwind any positron shooters, deactivate your lightsaber, power down any Tesla coils, turn off any unattended Bunsen burners, and mind the hot stuff (heaters, hot air guns, that toasty printer enclosure, etc).
Housekeeping. Paper towels within reach, clutter out of elbow range. Bottles knock over exactly as easily as you fear... Gloop! is practically a superfluid and it will spread faster than you think it will.
🖼 ARTWORK — Top-down "mission control" workspace diagram — wax paper sheet, Gloop! bottle upright in its retail box, gloved hands, fan with airflow arrows crossing both the workpiece and the scientist's face, paper towels, a crossed-out candle and a crossed-out silicone mat in a "NOPE" corner. Style: clean instructional line art with the label's icon language.
Opening a bottle without redecorating
Gloop! stratifies as it sits (science does that). So:
Shake for ~30 seconds.
Let it settle for ~2 minutes. Shaking traps Gloop! between the cap seals and can build a little pressure.
Open away from your face and other body parts you're attached to. Literally.
🖼 ARTWORK — 3-step icon row — bottle with shake arrows + "30 sec", bottle with clock + "2 min", bottle opening angled away from a smiling scientist's face with a small spray warning glyph.
Storage: the Containment Vessel
That retail box your Gloop! came in? It's not packaging, it's a containment vessel, and the label says DO NOT DISCARD for good reason. Store the bottle in it, upright, cool and dry, at or below 39°C/103°F, away from sunlight, printers, heaters, children, flame throwers, black holes, cybernetically enhanced goldfish, and your evil lair in Earth's core. It protects against drops AND prolongs shelf life. For best results, use your Gloop! within 90 days of opening.
🖼 ARTWORK — Gloop! bottle happily tucked inside its retail box like a spaceship in a docking bay, small shield glyphs; thermometer showing "≤39°C"; tiny goldfish with a robot eye being waved away.
Ready?
Workspace prepped, gloves on, fan spinning? Excellent. The Robot Overlords have cleared you for Your First Bond →
