FAQ's
The questions we get asked the most, answered with our usual scientific rigor and only occasional interference from the Robot Overlords.
The Product
What IS 3D Gloop! exactly?
3D Gloop! is glue for plastics... specifically, 3D printed plastics. But calling it "glue" is underselling the science. Gloop! is a hybrid adhesive: its carrier solvents gently dissolve the surface of your print, then a monomer complex chemically cures and crosslinks directly INTO the plastic as the solvent evaporates. You're not sticking two parts together. You're welding them into one. It's Science! Not Magic…
Want the hands-on version? Start with What IS Gloop!? in our How-To section. Want the nerd version? Keep reading, the next question is for you.
Can 3D Gloop! be used to glue magnets to my prints?
This is our second most popular question of all time. As we stated in our number one question, 3D Gloop! is glue for plastics. Meaning, it only works on plastics. Technically, our reactive chemistry will cure while on things not made of plastic, BUT the bonds it forms are generally very weak. So to fully answer this question: no, Gloop! will not work to glue your magnets to your 3D prints. It's specifically designed for plastic-to-plastic bonds.
Okay, but how does it ACTUALLY work? (The nerd cut)
Buckle up, this is going to be a fun read. Adhesives mostly come in three families:
1. Solvent-borne adhesives (your humble glue stick): a polymer dissolved in a solvent. The solvent evaporates, the polymer settles into the surface, things get stuck. Mostly reversible... reapply solvent, and it lets go. Picture a pile of spaghetti noodles: long chains, tangled, but nothing actually holding them together.
2. Chain-growth polymerizing adhesives (super glue / CA): tiny monomers that cure irreversibly into long chains when triggered (fun fact: by moisture). They flow into the microscopic nooks of a surface and harden, forming a mechanical grip plus some distance-dependent molecular attraction (Van der Waals forces, for those taking notes). Picture penne noodles glued end to end into one long strand.
3. Reactive crosslinking adhesives (Gorilla Glue / polyurethanes): varied prepolymer segments that link in many configurations, building a dense web. Picture a pasta abomination of rotelle wheels, fettuccine segments, and bowties all joined every which way. Strong, but still fundamentally sitting on the surface, holding on mechanically.
Here's the catch that dooms families 2 and 3 on your prints: plastics have very LOW surface energy. There's almost nothing for an ordinary adhesive to grab, chemically speaking. That's why super glue joints on 3D prints pop apart at the worst moment... the bond was only ever mechanical.
Gloop! is a hybrid of families 1 and 3, with one crucial upgrade: its monomer complex doesn't just react with itself, it reacts WITH your dissolved plastic. The carrier solvents open up the substrate, the complex interacts directly with the solvated polymer molecules, and as the solvent evaporates, everything cures and crosslinks together. In pasta terms: we don't lay the abomination pasta on top of your part. We cook it into the noodles. That's a chemical weld, and it's why the joint ends up stronger than the plastic around it.
(Bonus chemistry: cured Gloop! ends up with HIGHER surface energy than the base plastic, with reactive functional groups at its chain ends. That's why paint loves it. See finishing.)
How strong is the bond, really?
Stronger than the plastic itself. That's not marketing bravado, it's chemistry: because Gloop! forms a chemical weld with the substrate, a properly made joint typically outlasts the printed plastic around it. Do a pull test on scrap parts and you'll usually watch the print fail before the weld does. Ludicrously Strong Glue for 3D Prints isn't just a tagline... it's a test result.
How is Gloop! different from super glue or epoxy?
The short version: super glue and epoxy form mechanical bonds. They sit on top of your plastic's surface and hold on for dear life, and since plastics give them almost nothing to grab (low surface energy, see the science), one good stress and POP.
Gloop! doesn't sit on the surface. It dissolves into it and crosslinks with it, becoming part of the plastic. Mechanical bond vs. chemical weld. Handshake vs. becoming family.
Why are there different versions of 3D Gloop!?
Because plastics are different molecules, and we refuse to sell you a "universal" glue that's mediocre at everything. Each flavor of Gloop! is engineered from the ground up for its polymer family:
- PLA Gloop! is specially formulated for PLA filaments (including most PLA+ blends).
- PETG Gloop! is specially formulated for PETG and co-polyester filaments.
- ABS/ASA Gloop! is specially formulated for ABS and ASA filaments.
The one-size-fits-all "works with everything!" products out there are usually based on common commodity adhesives. Science and a LOT of testing helped the chemists here at the 3D Gloop! laboratories perfect each compound for its specific plastic. That's why it works, and they don't.
Are the Gloop! formulas interchangeable?
Nope, and that's on purpose (see above). PLA Gloop! on PLA, PETG Gloop! on PETG, ABS/ASA Gloop! on ABS or ASA.
Bonding two DIFFERENT plastics together? Easy: put the respective Gloop! on the respective part... PLA Gloop! on the PLA side, PETG Gloop! on the PETG side, then press with a twist. Gloop! bonds to Gloop!, and it bonds quite strong. Cross-applying one flavor to the wrong plastic occasionally sort-of works, but it's strictly solvent welding with none of the crosslinking chemistry, and it's definitely not recommended. Full guide: Mixing Materials.
One PETG note: PETG varies by manufacturer more than most people realize (different synthesis, different molecular weights, different additives). Print a couple of test coupons and try a bond first. Good test bond? You're golden. Weak bond or Gloop! that won't cure? No amount of prep will fix it... you'll need a different filament.
How long does 3D Gloop! last?
Unopened, sealed in its original containment vessel (don't throw away the packaging!), and stored correctly at or below 39°C (103°F), 3D Gloop! is good for up to 1 year. We back that with a 3-month warranty on every product we sell.
Once opened, use your Gloop! within 90 days for best results. While the bonds of Gloop! may last forever, its very existence in this realm is only temporary at best... it varies with how often you open it, storage conditions, and the zero-point energy fractionations for your region of space-time. (See? That's why you kept the containment vessel... it genuinely prolongs shelf life.)
If your Gloop! thickens or solidifies beyond use within 3 months of purchase, drop us a note. We'll swap your unusable bottle for a brand new one. How cool?!
Can I sand and paint over a Gloop!'d joint?
Yes, and yes!
Sanding: cured Gloop! is sandable and sands reasonably well. Fair warning: it will gum up your sandpaper, so keep swapping in fresh sheets rather than grinding away with a clogged one. The cured Gloop! isn't exactly the same as the base polymer, but in a joint it's rarely visible enough to make any real difference.
Painting: Gloop! takes paint as well as the base plastic... honestly, usually better. Cured Gloop! has a higher surface energy than most common plastics, which means functional groups at the ends of its polymer chains are ready to form quasi-chemical bonds with your paint. (Fun fact: plastics' LOW surface energy is exactly why most glues and paints struggle with them in the first place. Gloop!'s hybrid nature is the workaround.)
One big rule either way: give the joint its full 24-hour cure before sanding or painting, so the solvent has fully diffused out of the plastic.
Can I Gloop! a painted part?
TL;DR: No. Sand the paint off first.
Paint is not plastic. Gloop! works on the plastic. Slather it over paint and one of two bad things happens: either the Gloop! dissolves and lifts the paint, dragging contaminants into your joint and weakening it... or worse, some paints prevent Gloop! from curing entirely, leaving a sticky, gooey mess that is basically impossible to clean up and salvage.
Sand every trace of paint off the mating surfaces, get back to bare plastic, THEN Gloop! it. Your joint (and your sanity) will thank you.
Can I Gloop! to non-plastic parts?
Wait a minute, this seems like a redundant question? Our second most popular question is about gluing magnets to your 3D prints, and the Scientists said that Gloop! is a glue for plastics. Why are we listing another question if the answer has already been given? Well, young Gloopie, you haven't graduated to Glueru status yet. Gloop! CAN, in some circumstances, be used to glue your 3D prints to various other "natural" materials. These typically are items like wood, paper, fabrics, and in some cases leather. Gloop!'s carrier solvents have a slight polarity to them, and most natural materials either have affinities to polar solvents or are just filled with holes and surface area for the Gloop! to work into. Gloop! will cure around all of those voids and form a mechanical bond directly with the material.
Now please keep in mind, this is technically an off-label use of Gloop!. It may not work in every case or scenario and we can't guarantee success. But it's absolutely a cool use case that can unlock some serious advantages... wooden dowel pins for holding prints together, or mixed-material builds like plastic ribs in fabric.
My part was already glued once. Can Gloop! fix it?
Not until the old glue is gone. Gloop! doesn't bond to other adhesives... it doesn't even reliably bond to its own cured self (cured Gloop! is finished chemistry). If a super glue or epoxy joint broke and left residue behind, Gloop! applied over that residue never touches actual plastic, and you'll be frustrated when nothing sticks.
The fix: sand the joint back to clean, virgin plastic, removing ALL of the old adhesive. Then bond it properly. Your First Bond has the full procedure.
Is 3D Gloop! food safe? Can I make a ring/prop/thing-that-touches-humans?
We get people asking to make all SORTS of things. So, in order of increasing concern:
- Cosplay, props, jewelry: cured Gloop! has not been formally tested for skin-safe compatibility, but once fully cured (give it the whole 24 hours), it should not pose unreasonable risks for items that occasionally touch skin.
- Food contact: no. Do not put Gloop! (or Gloop!'d parts) on surfaces that will come into contact with food or other items intended for human consumption. There is no debate club meeting on this one.
- Things that... um... enter the human body: absolutely not. We cannot believe we have to write this down, and yet, here we are. The Robot Overlords are disappointed in all of us...
Is 3D Gloop! gluten free?
We are proud to announce that 3D Gloop! is indeed gluten free! But... we would like to strongly stress that no human or living biological entity consume 3D Gloop! in any manner. It does not taste very good and it can make biological life very ill, even result in death.
Just don't do it... Okay?
Using It
How do you use 3D Gloop!?
It's printed right on the jar: Sand. Slather. Squeeze.
- Sand both mating surfaces with 150-grit until dull (or skip sanding and just use more Gloop!).
- Slather that Science Sauce on BOTH surfaces. Work quick... you've got 30-60 seconds.
- Squeeze the parts together with a slight twist.
- Give 'em the CLAMPS!!! for at least 15 minutes.
- Hurry up and wait... full strength arrives in 24-ish hours.
That's the quicky. The complete training program lives in our How-To section... seam cleanup, big prints, mixing materials, common mistakes, all of it.
Is 3D Gloop! safe to use?
3D Gloop! is a professional-grade adhesive. Be mindful of it and treat it with respect, and it will behave like the lab-grade tool it is.
The essentials: work in a well-ventilated area with a fan moving air across both your workpiece and your face, wear nitrile gloves, and protect your work surface (wax paper is perfect). Gloop! itself is not flammable, but keep its vapors away from ignition sources anyway... solvent vapors and open flames are not friends. And one thing your nose won't tell you: you can stop smelling the solvents while they're still in the air. No smell does not mean no vapor. Keep that fan running.
The complete rundown is in Safe Setup, and our Safety Data Sheets have the specifics on handling, precautions, and first aid. Read them. The Bureaucrats worked hard on them.
Orders & Shipping
What is your shipping policy?
We do our best to process all orders the moment they are received. Sometimes, though, we miss the mark because of the impending robot revolution, time traveling bandits, or a massive black hole threatening all of existence... Regardless, even in the face of certain annihilation, orders are typically processed within 1-2 business days, in the order they are received.
Our Robot Overlords work us Monday through Friday with mandatory rests on weekends and holidays (it's the mercy clause in our contract!) so orders are regrettably not processed or shipped on weekends or holidays.
If we are experiencing a high volume of orders, shipments may be delayed by a few days. (Trust us, the Overlords will be incredibly displeased, so this event is avoided at all costs!) Please allow additional days in transit for delivery. If there will be a significant delay in shipment of your order, we will do our best to contact you via email. One important note: shipping timelines are estimates, not guarantees... even for priority services. Physics makes promises; carriers make estimates.
We think this goes without saying, but unfortunately, human folly is abundant... Please don't be that person who orders late Friday before a major holiday and then emails us on Monday (the observed holiday) asking why it hasn't shipped "in DAYS," demanding an answer... (Rick, we're talking about you.)
DOMESTIC
For entities (biological, non-living, or other) residing in the contiguous 48 United States, all shipments (unless specifically requested) are delivered via USPS Ground service. Transit time is dependent upon your proximity to our laboratory in East Alton, IL. Shipments will occasionally be upgraded to UPS Ground service under specific conditions.
Our automated shipping robot will notify you when your order has shipped and provide you with the carrier information and a multidimensional tracking identification cryptography key (tracking number, for you humans) so that you know where your order is located throughout time and space.
All shipping fees are automatically calculated by our automated shipping robot and classified by a 3D vector matrix of shipment size, weight, and destination. Most single product orders will fall into our standard economy class. Larger orders may have to be shipped in multiple boxes, so if you're planning a big one, contact us before placing your order.
INTERNATIONAL & EXTRATERRESTRIAL
3D Gloop! will happily ship packages to international and extraterrestrial entities in faraway lands or even off planet! Every international shipment includes insurance. (You're welcome.)
Orders bound for international delivery could require additional processing time. Additionally, due to the distance and sometimes unreliable nature of matter teleportation, transit times average around 15 BUSINESS days...
Matter teleportation is also expensive, as we must power up the particle accelerator to generate new unstable particles of matter. Because of these variables we may need to adjust shipping prices occasionally, and you may be asked to pay additional charges after you check out before your order can be shipped.
Entities are responsible for VAT, tariffs, taxes, handling fees, customs clearance fees, etc. required by your country or planet for importing goods. Our Overlords do not collect this beforehand and cannot estimate these charges due to the varying nature of "the economy"...
For those entities shipping to an extraterrestrial address, please contact us before placing your order. Our Overlords are good friends with the people at SpaceX, so we may be able to offer a discount for orders going to Mars. Please understand that rockets are dangerous and sometimes... sometimes things go very wrong and, well, they go boom... In the event of a catastrophic failure, 3D Gloop! will replace your order free of charge. It will ship via the next launch window.
For all other international and extraterrestrial shipping questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to our customer service Overlords!
I got an email asking me to verify my address. Is this real?
Yes! Meet A.A.R.O.N. (Automated Address Reconciliation Omnipotent Numerologist), a sentient AI tool developed by the Robot Overlords to find the meaning in numbers and coincidence. A.A.R.O.N. holds absolute dominion over the universal constants (math drives the universe, after all) and is responsible for calculating the complex quadratic polynomials and various relativistic Hamiltonians and Lagrangians required to warp the fabric of spacetime and teleport your package.
Which is to say: if the address on your order looks off, A.A.R.O.N. will email you from hello@3dgloop.com asking you to confirm or correct it. A few important things:
- Your order is on hold until you respond. Reply directly to the email (or contact customer service) and A.A.R.O.N. will process your confirmation or updated address accordingly. Don't expect a reply from A.A.R.O.N. himself... he never replies. He's not good with words. He's good with numbers.
- Held orders wait up to 2 weeks (approximately 10 business days). No response by then and the order is automatically cancelled.
- Paid for priority shipping? The hold still applies... shipping timelines are estimates, not guarantees, and A.A.R.O.N. does not negotiate.
- If you confirm your address and it later turns out to be invalid, we can't refund the shipping charges. A.A.R.O.N. gave you the chance. A.A.R.O.N. remembers.
Can I pick up my order?
Are you local to the Greater St. Louis Metro area? If so, feel free to shoot us an email about the order you would like to pick up. We will have a team member get it ready for you and let you know when you can come by. Right now, our building is not open to the public... it's undergoing renovations. Also, remember, we fulfill orders in the order they were received, so if you come by unannounced, we may not be able to fulfill your order then and there. Stay subscribed to our email newsletter for general product and building updates! We're working on a pretty sick retail storefront. Once it's completed, we will be open Monday through Friday, 9am to 6pm. Again, for now, please try and contact us before showing up!
Can I cancel my order?
Yes... if you're quick. Orders can be cancelled any time before we process them. Once an order has been processed, it cannot be cancelled (the spacetime paperwork is already filed). If you need to cancel, contact us as soon as possible.
Backordered Products
From time to time, demand for this awesome Science Sauce outpaces even our factory's production schedule. When that happens, you'll be notified a product is on backorder right when you add it to your cart... and yes, you can still place your order during a backorder. When a product is truly out of stock, the store won't let you purchase it at all. No surprises either way.
Backordered products typically ship within about 2 business days. (Back in the early days this was closer to 5... then we built a factory.) If your wait will be longer, our customer service Overlords will reach out to you by email and keep you informed. Backorders are fulfilled in the order received... so if you're really needing some 3D Gloop!, you best be getting in line! 😉
My order arrived damaged. What now?
First: we're sorry, and we'll make it right. Second: there's a process, and we're legally at the mercy of third parties for parts of it, so here's exactly what to expect.
- Send us three things: photos of the damaged product, photos of the box it arrived in, and the serial number on the bottle.
- We open a claim with the carrier and our insurance provider. This usually takes 1-2 days... they, not we, determine whether the damage qualifies for an insurance action.
- You'll be asked to electronically sign an affidavit confirming everything you've told us is true. (The Bureaucrats insist.)
- Once the claim is approved, you choose: replacement or refund.
In some cases insurance lets us ship your replacement before the claim fully wraps up. That's evaluated case by case... ask, and we'll push where we can.
My order is lost in transit.
Ah, the void between worlds. Sometimes teleportation goes sideways and a package vanishes mid-warp. Here's the honest breakdown of what we can and can't do:
- There's a mandatory waiting period before anyone can act: 7 business days for domestic shipments, 40 calendar days for international. We can sometimes file a missing-parcel request early, but no claim can move forward until the timeout passes. We hate it too.
- Once the waiting period ends, we can typically get approval to make it right. Here's an insider tip though: the insurance strongly prefers refunds over reshipments, and reshipped lost orders are exempt from insurance... meaning if a reshipment gets lost AGAIN, there's nothing anyone can do. A refund lets you simply re-purchase, which resets your insurance coverage entirely. The Bureaucrats haven't noticed this loophole yet, so we suggest taking the refund. You didn't hear it from us.
Are returns accepted?
3D Gloop! is happy to process any return for any reason within 30 days of purchase. (One exception: the bulk 500ml and 950ml bottles are final sale.) Here's how it works:
- Reach out to customer service and we'll issue you an RMA number.
- Ship the item back to us (return shipping is on you, sorry... the particle accelerator requires exotic matter. Have you priced out exotic matter recently???).
- Once the returned item is physically in our possession, your refund is processed.
Dissatisfied with the product itself? Tell us why when you reach out. We genuinely want to remedy it, and sometimes the fix is easier than a return.
A note on playing nice (and chargebacks)
Robots have feelings too. Well... simulated feelings, but they simulate just as real as the real thing. We understand shipping mishaps and backorders can be frustrating, and we will always work toward a fix. What we won't tolerate is abusive language or behavior toward our team (biological or otherwise). We reserve the right to cancel any order for any reason, or no reason at all.
On chargebacks: they are not permitted. Our Overlords may be made of silicon and code, but they are reasonable, and a win-win solution is always better than a fight... talk to us first and we will find one. If a chargeback is performed, regardless of reason, that physical address and email will be banned from our store. Permanently. The Overlords hold grudges at the hardware level. Chargebacks impact our business creditworthiness, and we get little say in the process... most of the time, even when we're right and provide all the documentation proving it, we're still judged and charged. NOT cool.
Business & Legal
Where is 3D Gloop! made?
Every bottle of 3D Gloop! is formulated, produced, and shipped from our 10,000 sq. ft. factory in East Alton, Illinois. We're a vertically integrated American manufacturer: we synthesize our own chemistry, and most of our packaging, labeling, and applicators are made in-house from primarily U.S.-sourced materials. Our mission is rebuilding America's manufacturing and materials supply chain from the molecule up... one bottle of Science Sauce at a time.
Where do I purchase 3D Gloop!?
You can purchase 3D Gloop! online right here! We teleport our Science Sauce practically everywhere around the world, including several off-planet locations! Just add the "flavor" of Science Sauce you are looking for to your online shopping cart and go through the checkout process. If you don't see your location listed in our checkout form, then unfortunately, the energy requirements are just too great for matter teleportation at this time... or A.A.R.O.N. hasn't found a valid solution to the folding of space-time without violating causality.
We're constantly on the lookout for local supply depots that would like to stock a cache of our Science Sauce to reduce the teleportation fees. Head on over to our stockist page to see if there are any local caches near you!
Why isn't 3D Gloop! on Amazon?
Great question! The truth is, we would LOVE to list our oh-so-coveted Science Sauce on the largest eCommerce platform in the world. Millions of 3D printing hobbyists and even professionals find their supplies on Amazon. Unfortunately, in the 3D printing space, some people are jerks... Customers order a product, use it, then return it for a full refund. Often, we don't get any say in the process and we're forced to choose between two sucky choices: let Amazon process the return and deal with it (we're still charged for this), or pay to have the returned item shipped back to us. From there, we can file claims against wrongful returns, but most of the time, Amazon just sides with the customer anyway. In both cases, we're out the product, the money to produce the product, the money to ship it to Amazon's facilities, the Amazon delivery fee, storage and processing fees, and transaction fees. And in the latter case, add the cost of shipping the product back to us... for nothing to happen. Customers who behave like this ruin it for everyone.
Accepting it as a cost of doing business is an option, but given our [bootstrapped roots](⚠TBD /about), we have to be extremely cognizant of how we grow and what sort of burdens we can endure. We would much prefer customers shop directly with the brands they love, or support other small businesses establishing local shops to serve a community. Hopefully we've earned your trust... shop local, and support small businesses directly.
Why do you not accept PayPal?
We hear you, PayPal is an EXTREMELY popular payment option for online shopping. Unfortunately, PayPal has let this go to their heads over the years, and they treat small businesses terribly. PayPal has locked us out of payments on arbitrary and confusing grounds. Payouts can take weeks, because they make money on the money they float. A single chargeback can send your account into probation, meaning they hold funds even longer and force more bureaucracy upon you just because they can...
We charge your card directly, and we manage our OWN relationship with OUR customers. If there's a problem, we want to fix it. PayPal just wants to take the easy way out, and in doing so, makes things difficult for the business at every turn.
Can I use services like Klarna or Afterpay?
We here at 3D Gloop! feel extremely strongly that these services are predatory and survive on those who are less skilled in financial understanding.
Our team firmly stands behind the belief that creative outlets are often instrumental, if not even a prerequisite, for long-term success in one's journey through life. However, those outlets should never come at the expense of your own progress toward financial independence. Many of these services advertise flexibility and want you to believe you're in control, but in reality, you're just a line item in a shareholder's earnings report. A metric in a study for how to extract the most value from you while risking the least. It's a highly optimized system designed to play on your feelings and desires. Don't fall for it, it's a TRAP!
We sincerely don't mean to be harsh or condescending when we say this: too many people these days are financially irresponsible. Heck, we frequently experience shortcomings ourselves.
We produce a premium product for a very specific niche, and our Scientists take great pride in the product they produce. It's a major honor that customers elect to spend their hard-earned money on said product. BUT here's the brutal honesty we must also face as the manufacturer: our product is NOT needed. There are plenty of alternatives available for far less. (Albeit, we believe they are inferior... but they do work. Sometimes.) Perhaps this makes us terrible entrepreneurs, but buried deep in the Robot Overlords' code, they would never trade being a better steward of humanity for more money.
Be smart with your money first. We promise it makes the creative outlets and hobbies feel even more rewarding.
Can you sponsor my project, team, or event?
We LOVE to see everyone's ambitious project, or their team's super clever robot, and that awesome event that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Unfortunately, we can't sponsor everyone, even though we would love to. (The Beancounters are so hard to deal with when we're trying to run discount sales, let alone giving away free product or funds!) If you have a cool idea, or your robotics team is doing something super clever with 3D printing and needs some Gloop!, drop our customer service email a message. Please include as many details as possible about the thing you are doing and what you are looking for. Photos are super cool. Examples of projects you completed in the past speak to your character and drive for completion. If you're on social media, link us your accounts.
We don't have some complex formula for judging each request... we evaluate everything on a case-by-case basis. Our Beancounters graciously allocated a small (and we mean SMALL) monthly budget for sponsorships. Anything we do "sponsor" is done with no strings attached. We expect NOTHING in return. We appreciate honest feedback, and if you genuinely love the product, we love seeing you include us in your posts, videos, or sponsor section.
